New York 2013 - 2016

After living in New York for decades I decided at last to paint it. That meant taking on crowds of course. And then there's the wonderful history of painting the city and its denizens. I spent time looking at John Sloane, Isabel Bishop, Paul Cadmus, George Bellows and many more. I did hundreds of sketches for the figures and settings, eventually reconstituting them to try to create something of the frenzy of the place.
